Make Space for a New Learning Space
When hearing the words learning space I automatically think of a basic classroom with desks and chairs in rows, because that's how I've experienced school. Now, there are new innovative ways, to make the learning space more inviting and interesting so that students want to learn. The video titled "Flexible Learning Environments" shows classrooms with brightly colored walls, desks that have attached rolling chairs, and bulletin boards with glass tiles that can be written on with dry-erase markers. These cool features already make the classroom seem fun and exciting, which can lead to students wanting to be there and learn. Also, the teachers in the video talked about how with the rolling desks, it makes splitting into groups easier as the students can roll around and form groups. This gives more opportunities for group projects and discussions, which are student-centered which makes learning more interesting. A student in the video explained how being able to move around with his rolling desk makes learning more interesting because he isn't being told to sit still in his chair.
Another change to learning spaces is the use of technology to create virtual and digital learning spaces. Nowadays, technology is everywhere and students have access to all the information in the world. The article titled "How Learning Environments Are Changing" talks about how virtual schools are starting to become more popular. Having classes online gives students in rural areas an opportunity to learn more if their school is far away. Also using the internet for learning gives students the opportunity to connect and collaborate with other students from across the world. It also gives students the chance to work at their own pace and be able to take classes that would have too many students in one physical classroom. There are downsides to virtual schools, however. The article talks about how some students may get off track easily because they are by themselves and would need constant reminders to stay on track. Also, the normal face-to-face social interactions of school would be missing.
Overall, I do think that classrooms need to be more inviting with new features like more comfortable furniture to make students want to be at school. I also think that online learning is a great thing for older students who are capable of learning independently without any assistance. Some younger students may not have the skills to do independent online learning, but high school and college students should definitely try to benefit from online classes to enhance their learning.
